Lorraine Macrae from the Scottish Rural Network Support Unit reports on the West Lothian LEADER Farm Diversification and Rural Enterprise Event.

Robert Arkley, owner of the highly successful Kingsfield Golf course and Driving Range in Linlithgow, welcomed over 50 people to an event hosted by West Lothian LEADER on 26 September 2016.

Soil Association Scotland are holding a series of seminars in coming weeks with renowned soil expert Jo Scamell, from Ground Level Nutrition Ltd.

The events are free for farmers and land managers and will offer practical advice on improving efficiencies and increasing farm profitability.

The dates and venues for the seminars are:

  • Aviemore - 28 September
  • Inverurie - 29 September
  • Dumfries - 5 October
  • South Queensferry - 6 October

The Plunkett Foundation's Community Ownership Awards 2016 are open for entries.

Community-owned businesses in the UK and Ireland are being encouraged to enter the awards run by the national charity Plunkett Foundation.

The awards have nine geographic categories and are open to all forms of trading activity from shops and pubs to farms, woodlands and broadband projects.

Fertile Minds 2016

Fertile Minds is a one-day conference for aspiring, business-minded young people looking to develop their careers in agriculture. There will be keynote speakers, industry experts, panel discussions, Q&A sessions and afternoon workshops on a range of agricultural business topics, aimed at different entrant levels and career aspirations. There will also be plenty of opportunities to meet and network with your peers.

A new Farm Advisory Service for Scotland has launched today (20 September 2016).

The Farm Advisory Service (FAS) website is now available along with a dedicated telephone helpline for farmers and crofters - 0300 323 0161. And the service will be enhanced in the coming months to become a comprehensive package of practical information and advice to farmers and crofters across Scotland

Funding of over £7 million will help to create and develop around 140 new farming businesses in Scotland.
