Digital Outreach activities from ScotSectorlink

Information from ScotSectorlink

ScotSectorlink have produced four guides on Digital Outreach activities for young people in rural areas and all who feel excluded from paid work.

ScotSectorlink is an independent cross-sector and cross-discipline initiative which grew in Ayrshire and Edinburgh. ScotSectorlink has worked since 2010 from Nairn, establishing the community-based Moray Coast Community Magazines publishing initiative in 2014.

All publications and guides are informed widely by exchanges with people of all ages, whether in education, in work, out of work or retired. All have been produced only because of need raised during such exchanges. ScotSectorlink has retained its independence by sale of space in its MCCM publications and by personal funds. For further information visit the ScotSectorlink website.

All of the activities may use digital facilities, when searching for data and presenting findings. The activities involve:

  1. Creating a poster or pamphlet on personal services
  2. Creating a poster or pamphlet on property services
  3. Creating a poster or pamphlet on trading aspects of an item
  4. Creating a poster and perhaps memory box on an item or event

Young people see activities 1 and 2 as being positively cool. This is because they:

  • think that gathering details of locally-recommended services is a good way in which to learn how to reach out to people other than their families and peers
  • recognise that gathering process can result in producing useful community resources which inform local self-management by highlighting recommendations so also helping the avoidance of scams

People generally see all four activities as being cool, because they:

  • know that researching into a market helps inform education and career decisions, by spotting niches and latest trends in buying and selling which are ahead of data captured by government systems
  • realise that paid work is found on reputation and recommendation, and that creating and sustaining paid work relies much on people with interests and energies reaching out to meet people with assets or investment capacity, even if the assets are simply dry, cheap living, working or storage space

If your organisation wishes to promote these activities, contact Peter at Moray Coast Community Magazines or email enquiry@scotsectorlink.org.uk.
