Rural Wisdom and the rural policy context: Tender for consultancy support

Outside The Box Singing Ladies
Katharine Johnston

Outside The Box are looking for a person or team to provide small-scale consultancy support.  They will help show the links between policies that affect rural communities and the issues that are coming from Rural Wisdom.  This work will run until January 2022.

About Rural Wisdom

Rural Wisdom is a development project that is supporting rural communities to work well for people as they get older.  It is funded by the National Lottery and is a partnership project with Outside the Box as the grant holder.

The main elements are

  • working with community groups in 9 locations across Scotland and Wales to develop new activities, influence what other people to and other ways to develop opportunities for older people and give local people a voice
  • working alongside people in other rural communities in Scotland
  • sharing ideas and experience through publications and social media
  • working with other organisations and networks to raise issues that are important to people
  • evaluations and learning around how the project works and the impacts it has.

There are examples of what they do and the issues that come up in their blogs, updates and reports:  www.ruralwisdom.org

The project began in 2017 and they are now in the fourth year of the 5-year project.  Throughout, people have raised issues that tend to be part of policies around rural communities as well as on issues that are typically thought of as older people’s policy issues.  The experience of Rural Wisdom, as with many other initiatives that give older people a voice, is that many of the issues that are important to older people are those that affect everyone in their community – transport, housing, local shops and services, jobs in the local area and economic sustainability.

There are opportunities now for people in communities to contribute their experiences and ideas as part future plans for their local areas and in national policy.
