Free digital skills training for over 50s

A new project coordinated by Voluntary Arts Scotland is offering anyone aged 50+ who helps run creative cultural activity a chance to access free training in digital skills.
Basic digital skills could be anything from establishing a Facebook page for your group or designing an eye-catching poster for an event, to using mobile technology to reach new members.
The project, titled ‘Putting the social into social media’ is being funded by the Scottish Government as part of its wider Digital Scotland programme, delivered through SCVO’s Digital Participation Charter Fund. Voluntary Arts Scotland hope the training will provide participants with new skills that can help their creative group/project flourish.
Voluntary-led creative activity comes in many forms, from community festivals, amateur dramatics companies and choirs to knitting groups and photography clubs, to name but a few. The internet, and other new technologies, can help groups grow and flourish in a variety of ways, offering new ways to communicate, secure funding and reach new members, audiences and volunteers.
Many people aged 50+ are digital experts in the voluntary-led creative sector, from helping to run groups to providing organisational support. However, research suggests that some people in this same age-group would benefit from increased knowledge of digital skills to help them in these tasks.
So if you’re over 50, actively involved in a creative group and/or project, and feel you could benefit from training in social media and other digital skills, Voluntary Arts Scotland would love to hear from you.

There's also time allocated for an open discussion session, allowing us to explore specific topics set by the group. This could be a particular channel like LinkedIn, Snapchat or Instagram or it could be an issue you're facing in your organisation.
This training will help you to:
- Understand the benefits of using social media
- Develop a social media strategy
- Get hands-on with Twitter
- Understand the role of your website, blogging and video & audio content.
- Explore a range of channels like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, LinkedIn, e-Newsletters and more
Please bring a laptop, tablet or smartphone to take part in the hands-on sessions.
Coffee, tea and biscuits provided but lunch is not - please feel free to bring a packed lunch for after the workshop. There are also lots of great lunch options close to the venue.

As a bonus for all those who attend you will come away from the session with tons of information from the One Digital team to help your organisation get the most out of digital, including:

- How to access the digital participation library resources
- How signing-up to Good HQ can benefit your organisation

About the trainer
Ross is the founder of Be Good Be Social training and events, as well as Director of Third Sector Lab. He has worked with a wide range of charity and public sector clients on social media strategy, including Relationships Scotland, SCVO, Oxfam Scotland, Enable Scotland, and Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Ross also sits on Foundation Scotland's Impact and Innovation Committee and is Chair of Comic Relief's Community Cash Glasgow funding panel.

Brechin has been selected as the workshop location as it allows charities across Angus to access it from rural areas using public transport. They have a range of other workshops coming up.
This workshop is from 1-4pm. They are also running an evening workshop from 4.30-7.30pm on the same day.

About the workshop
Video can bring your charity's stories and events to life. Join this practical half-day workshop to learn the basics of simple video and audio storytelling.
This workshop is for staff, volunteers and service users of charities and community groups around Angus.
The workshop will cover:
- interview skills
- shooting and editing video and audio
- tips on equipment
- how to upload and share your content online
Everything you do will use the equipment you carry in your pocket. You'll look at tools, techniques, channels and beyond. If you have a smartphone, please bring it with you (but don't worry if you don't have one).
Coffee, tea and biscuits provided. Two free places per organisation.

About the trainer
Rosie McIntosh has worked in charity communications for the last decade. She has held senior communications roles at the Mental Welfare Commission, Oxfam, ENABLE Scotland and Mercy Corps as well as with a range of Third Sector Lab clients. Rosie is also the Project Lead for NHS GGC's Mindwaves project. Rosie's focus is on telling stories to achieve social change, whether through traditional media, online or using video and audio.
