A community business is any type of business that trades for community benefit and is democratically owned and controlled by the local community.

In this video, hear from Rosie in Kilchoan Community Shop, where the community is working to save its local shop and service station to prevent the village from becoming a “ghost town”. You’ll also hear from Louise at the Glenuig Community Inn about how their community came together to save the inn, the impact it has had locally.

Both organisations were supported in their journey by Plunkett UK, a charity which assists rural and island communities in the United Kingdom to create and run community-owned businesses. The organisation aims to support community-owned enterprises across the UK. They provide business advice to all types of community business, at all stages of their journey – from the initial idea, to long after the business is open and trading.

The Scottish Rural Network (SRN) fund the Scottish Rural and Island Community Pub Network, which is delivered by Plunkett UK on our behalf. The network supports rural and island community groups seeking to develop or take ownership of a pub within their community.

The video was filmed at the Plunkett UK Rural Community Business Awards 2026 event held in London.
