Local routes to Market: Exploring the opportunities in school food for Scottish suppliers

Are you a Scottish producer or supplier interested in the business opportunities in public procurement? Or do you work in catering or food procurement for a local authority that’s looking to support local businesses?

Farmers and crofters across the country will benefit from the simplification of schemes, which form part of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

This follows the laying of new regulations which will come into force on 1 January 2021.

A completely restored vintage tractor is set to be auctioned later this month to raise funds for RSABI – the charity supporting people in Scottish agriculture.

Plans to commission a Scottish Centre of Expertise in Biodiversity have been announced as part of the new draft strategy for the environment, natural resources and agricultural research programme.

Throughout October, farmers in Soil Association Scotland’s mob grazing group – Charley and Andrea Walker of Barnside Farm, Doug Christie of Durie Farm and Nikki and James Yoxall of Grampian Grazers – will be sharing short daily videos on Twitter and in our Mob Grazing Scotland Facebook group on the theme of moving animals and assessing pasture.

RSABI, the charity which supports people in Scottish agriculture, has this week welcomed Glenalmond College as the first-ever school member of its Supporters’ Scheme.

The Perthshire school with 360 boys and girls, both day pupils and boarders, welcomed RSABI vice-chairman David Leggat and Highland bull Donald to mark the occasion.

Planting Trees to Diversify Your Farm: Woodland creation, management and funding

For over 40 years, the Lockett family has been slowly but steadily planting trees on their farm in the Highlands, and using them to diversify their activity. Richard Lockett, also of the Scottish Farming and Wildlife Advisors Group (SCOTFWAG), will discuss how, as well as using the trees for livestock shelter and for wood fuel, they have created public woodland, wetlands and wildflower meadows and opened a B&B. Come along to discuss:

Six Farm Conservation Advisers, members of the Scottish Farming and Wildlife Advisers Group (ScotFWAG), have worked with over 60 Scottish farmers to create habitat benefiting many species of birds and bees.  The farmers involved in the project stretch from Shetland and Orkney to The Borders.

VirtRural Careers

The aim of this event is to raise awareness and increase knowledge of the careers available in Scotland’s land-based, aquaculture and environmental conservation sector. Due to the pandemic, we are going virtual, with the event being open to anyone interested in finding out more about careers in our sector, whether that be career influencers, students, parents or career changers.
