The session will avoid technical detail and specialist language, and will focus instead on ideas, examples and practical possibilities that feel relevant to community-led woodlands.
This webinar will feature three experienced forestry professionals working at the forefront of community woodland management:
Willie McGhee, Trustee of CWA and Forest Manager of Dun Coillich Community Woodland, will provide an outline of forestry in Scotland, describing the main silvicultural practices and placing community woodlands within the wider Scottish context.
Dirk Sporleder, Woodland Manager at Dronley Community Woodland, will share practical insights from the ecological transformation of existing woods, outlining strategies, challenges, successes and the long-term vision for developing diverse, resilient mixed woodlands using continuous cover approaches.
Jens Haufe, Senior Silviculturist Consultant with TreeStory, will introduce the principles of Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF) and explain the rationale for shifting forestry practice in response to climate change. Together, the speakers will offer a grounded, real-world perspective on sustainable woodland management that is directly relevant to community-led groups.
The webinar is for community woodland groups at all stages, whether you are new to woodland management or just starting to think about future options for your site. It will be led by CWA, with input from experts in sustainable forestry who work and manage community woodlands on the ground. They will share straightforward, real-life examples of what can be realistic for groups with limited time and resources.
There will be time for questions and discussion, information about a new grant scheme, and details of a possible follow-up site visit for anyone who would like to explore these ideas further.
