Forest Research & RSFS: Deer management and crop protection

This is a joint event between RSFS and Forest Research, aimed at those actively working in the forestry sector.

The session will be broken into three parts:

Illustrating the present: Raymond Henderson from the Association of Deer Management Groups will provide background to the topic and give an overview of the Natural Environment Bill. We will then look at barriers to deer management and have discussions on the current approach.

Implementing the research: Cally Ham from Forest Research will share the latest findings of research into tree trials, use of drones and herbivore assessments, as well as looking at research surrounding grey squirrels and crop protection. There will also be a case study of a successful deer cull incentivisation scheme presented by Victor Clements.

Imagining the future: the final part of the session will be an open floor for Q&A and discussion.

Objectives:

  • To understand the current barriers to effective deer management
  • To understand the context of deer management within the natural environment bill.
  • To learn what others are doing to manage deer populations and protect crop
  • To hear about the latest crop protection and deer management research
  • To learn about a successful deer cull incentivization scheme
