How can we help Scotland’s island communities participate in planning?

This is your chance to shape how island communities are supported to take part in planning decisions that affect everyday life.

Date and time: to

Location: Online

Organisation: Planning Aid Scotland

Planning Aid Scotland want to understand what would help island communities engage more confidently with planning processes, whether that’s:

  1. Community-led planning, such as Local Place Plans, and/or
  2. Understanding and engaging with planning processes for electricity and renewable energy developments.

How can I get involved?

You can take part in one (or both) of the following:

The workshop will be friendly, interactive and discussion-based, giving you space to share what works, what doesn’t and what support would make a real difference for your community.

Who this is for:

Your feedback will help inform the design of a new training programme aimed at empowering island communities to participate more fully in planning processes.

This work is an action from the draft National Islands Plan, laid before the Scottish Parliament in December 2025. The programme aims to support community-led planning and help island communities better understand and engage with planning processes, including those relating to renewable energy.

At this stage, the focus is on understanding community needs, ideas and gaps in existing support. Any future training would depend on funding being available.

Who can attend:

This event is for people living on a Scottish island or working with Scottish island communities.
