Mallaig Common Grazing: Smarter Management & Financial Know-How – Part A

Explore the best ways to run your Common Grazing, manage the finances, and ensure fair and transparent contributions.

Date and time: to

Location: Mallaig Community Centre

Organisation: Farm Advisory Service

Are you a Clerk, Treasurer, Common Grazing Committee member, or a shareholder in a Common? Then don’t miss this practical evening session designed to help you manage your Common Grazing with confidence and clarity.

Using a fictional Common Grazing, we’ll explore the best ways to run your Common Grazing, manage the finances, and ensure fair and transparent contributions. We’ll explore the real-world challenges faced by committee members and shareholders alike. You will leave understanding how to make matters more manageable, what is expected from shareholders, and the information that shareholders should receive. You’ll also receive easy-to-use worksheets to help you simplify your records and bring clarity to your role.

Held over two evenings, three weeks apart, we will look at the responsibilities of hard working committee members and different financial scenarios, so you can keep your Common Grazing running smoothly.

The events will cover:

  • The duties of committee members
  • Obligations of shareholders
  • How to calculate fair maintenance contributions
  • What to do if some shareholders are absentee or inactive
  • The difference between maintenance and improvement costs
  • How to handle payment collection
  • The ins and outs of income distribution (like resumption money)
  • Communications

Plus, there will be plenty of time for your own questions, answered by Finlay Beaton from the Crofting Commission and Arthur MacDonald.

To get the most out of these events, please book onto both parts.  In Part A, we look at the roles of the committee and dealing with Maintenance payment collection, and in Part B, we look at distribution of income such as Resumption money, and how to deal with collection of payments for improvements on the Common.

The meetings will be held in the evening and refreshments will be available. This event is FREE, but please book to ensure your space.
