At the entrance to the Moss, our peatland dedicated team will greet you and happily answer any peaty questions you may have. We’ll introduce you to the The Peatland Restoration Card Game, a unique and fun game created by CCC that allows players to fathom the complexities and benefits of peatland restoration. And, artist Helmut Lemke will be screening wee films that explore the sense of awe of peatland environments.

We also invite you to walk the ways of the more-than-human across the Moss of Cree following the desire lines created by animals on the Moss, which avoid the wettest patches and skirt around hummocks. On this guided walk, we will introduce you to the Moss of Cree and its awesome plants; tell the story of this bogs amazing recovery from a timber forest back to a bog, and acquaint you with the different methods we are using to monitor the Moss.

Guided walks at:

  • 12.10 meeting at the gazebo at the entrance to the Moss
  • 1.00 meeting at the gazebo at the entrance to the Moss
  • 2.00 meeting at the gazebo at the entrance to the Moss

Peatlands are difficult terrain to navigate. Your feet can easily sink into the soft wet ground, there are hummocks of raised peatland vegetation, and often tricky walking conditions. You can find yourself lifting your legs in an exaggerated fashion over the hummocks and with another step slopping into wet peat. However, on the Moss of Cree, there is clear passage made by animals, the desire lines of foxes and deer. These desire line routes avoid the wettest patches and skirt around hummocks. Walking the site to monitor it, our footprints have made these lines more pronounced. Clear walking routes across the site are taking shape, creating a beautiful invitation to experience walking the ways of the more-than-human.

For walking with us on the Moss you will need:

  • Wellies – the ground is soft and wet, even where the animals tread
  • A walking stick
  • Appropriate waterproof clothing, including trousers, is advised
  • Midge-net and insect repellnt advised.

There are no toilet facilities at the Moss of Cree

Please bring your own refreshments.

Parking is limited
