£500 worth of training on offer for new entrants to farming!

Lantra Scotland, in partnership with the Scottish Government, has opened applications up for the Next Generation Practical Training Fund.

Offering up to £500 of fully funded training per course to help new entrants build practical skills and strengthen the future rural workforce.

A total of £300,000 is available this year to support people who have either entered agriculture within the last five years (with the five-year period starting from age 18) or who have recently completed a relevant school or college course.

Funding may also be available for courses costing more than £500, where applicants can demonstrate clear value to their skills development or business.

Training topics include:

  • Tackling climate change
  • Protecting wildlife and improving habitats
  • Staying safe in the workplace
  • Using equipment and machinery
  • Running a farm business (including financial skills)

Henry Graham, Chair of the Farming Opportunities for New Entrants (FONE) group, said:

“It has been very evident that learning practical skills is vital in enabling the next generation to contribute to farming businesses. I am therefore delighted that another year’s funding for new entrants is now in place, with applications now being taken. A wide range of training programmes is available for both traditional and new skills, including financial matters.”
