£7.2M investment to upgrade Arnish Road and boost offshore wind potential in Stornoway

Upgraded Arnish Road will improve access to Stornoway’s deep water terminal and support offshore wind growth in the Western Isles

A major infrastructure upgrade is underway on the Isle of Lewis, with £7.2 million in public and private funding committed to transforming Arnish Road and enhancing access to key industrial and port facilities in Stornoway.

The project will see the full 3.3 km stretch of Arnish Moor Road upgraded to a two-track, fully resurfaced route connecting the A859 to Arnish Point. This includes improved access to the Stornoway Deep Water Terminal and the Arnish Industrial Complex, both vital to Scotland’s growing offshore wind sector.
Funding breakdown:
  • £3.4 million from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), part of the Scottish Government’s £500 million investment pledge in offshore wind infrastructure
  • £3.4 million from SSEN Transmission
  • £409,000 from Stornoway Port Authority

Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes broke ground on the development, highlighting Stornoway’s strategic role in supporting Scotland’s renewable energy ambitions commented,

“This strategic public investment, matched by shared endeavour and ambition from the private sector, will ensure the deep water terminal and industrial cluster at Arnish Point is equipped to meet demand and attract further investment.”

HIE’s Joanna Peteranna described Arnish as a “tremendous asset” with potential to expand its contribution to the renewables sector. SSEN Transmission’s Sandy Mactaggart emphasized the long-term community benefits, noting the road upgrade will support jobs and unlock the Western Isles’ renewable energy potential.

Stornoway Port Authority CEO Alex Macleod called the project a “cornerstone” of the Port’s long-term strategy, enabling industry growth and high-quality employment across Lewis.
