The Community of Raasay Retail Association (CORRA) is raising £1.5 million to transform the former Old Free Presbyterian Church into a modern, accessible facility that will better meet the needs of residents and visitors.
For more than 13 years, CORRA has successfully operated the island’s community shop and post office, providing essential goods and services for local people. However, the current premises have reached capacity and present accessibility challenges, limiting the organisation’s ability to expand services and respond to the needs of a growing community.
The proposed redevelopment will create a larger community shop and post office, improve accessibility, increase the range of products available, and provide a welcoming space where people can meet, connect and spend time together. The project also includes plans to support local employment, encourage the sale of more locally sourced goods and strengthen the long-term sustainability of island life.
At the heart of the campaign is a vision for a community asset that serves far more than a retail function. The new facility is intended to be a shared space that supports social connection, reduces isolation and provides a focal point for residents throughout the year.
To help achieve this goal, CORRA is encouraging supporters to get involved through donations, fundraising events and the purchase of specially created merchandise, with all profits contributing towards the project. Community groups, businesses, families and individuals are being invited to organise activities ranging from coffee mornings and bake sales to sponsored challenges and community gatherings.
The fundraising campaign is described as an investment in the future of the Isle of Raasay, helping to ensure that essential services remain at the heart of the community while creating a vibrant, accessible and welcoming space for generations to come.
