Forestry Workforce Census Launches Across Great Britain

Be counted in the first Britain-wide Forestry Workforce Census and help shape the future of the industry.

People working in forestry across Britain are being encouraged to take part in the Forestry Workforce Census, a new initiative led by Forest Research, on behalf of the Forestry Commission, Scottish Forestry, and the Welsh Government. It aims to better understand what the forestry operations workforce in Britain looks like today to build a clearer picture of the sector’s workforce.

The census aims to gather information about the people and skills that support forestry activities across England, Scotland and Wales. The findings will help improve understanding of workforce capacity, identify skills gaps, and support future planning for training, recruitment and investment in the sector.

Forest Research is encouraging everyone involved in forestry, from woodland managers and contractors to consultants and nursery staff, to contribute their experiences. The information collected will provide valuable evidence to help shape future workforce development and ensure the sector is equipped to meet growing demands in areas such as woodland creation, management and resilience.

Organisations across the forestry sector are being asked to submit information about their workforce on two separate dates – on 1 October 2026 and 1 March 2027 – to account for roles that are seasonal.

Organisations will have a month after these dates to complete the questionnaire about who was working on that specific date. If an individual is working on both the 1 October 2026 and the 1 March 2027 they should be counted on both census days.

Participation is voluntary.

Every organisation, from those with just one person to larger companies with many people and sub-organisations, whether employed and/or contracted, are invited to take part.

Have your say and help shape the future of forestry in Britain.
