Once complete, Project Gigabit will extend next‑generation broadband to over 77,000 premises across Scotland, including some of the hardest‑to‑reach rural and island communities.
Openreach has also confirmed that more than 90,000 rural and island homes and businesses across Scotland now have access to faster, more reliable full‑fibre broadband through the R100 contracts. In 2025 alone, engineers delivered 20,000 new connections, reaching locations from Shetland’s Yell and Unst to west‑coast communities such as Fionnphort and Balvicar, and villages including Port William and Dunragit in Dumfries & Galloway.
The rollout is described as “transformative,” improving connectivity for households, businesses, and community facilities, and supporting economic growth in areas previously limited by slow or unreliable broadband.
Together, the Project Gigabit expansion and Openreach’s ongoing R100 delivery mark a significant shift in digital access for rural Scotland. Faster, more dependable broadband will help local businesses compete, support remote working, and improve access to online services for communities across Dumfries & Galloway and beyond.
