Island Communities Embrace Revival of Health Walks Programme

Walk on Hebrides project breathing new life into Health Walks across Western Isles

Island residents across the Western Isles are stepping into a healthier future with the revival of the Health Walks programme, thanks to the efforts of Walk on Hebrides and support from Paths for All.

With funding from the Scottish Government and Transport Scotland, this initiative is helping communities reconnect with the benefits of walking—an activity proven to support both physical and mental wellbeing.

The programme had previously paused in 2021, but thanks to renewed funding and local dedication, it is now thriving once more under the leadership of Laura MacKay. MacKay has trained new Walk Leaders, expanded walking opportunities across the islands, and is working closely with local communities to ensure the initiative is inclusive for all. With particular focus on older residents and those with long-term health conditions, the walks provide a safe and social environment to encourage active lifestyles, build connections, and improve overall wellbeing.

The Walking for Health Fund, backed by Active Scotland, has played a crucial role in ensuring the programme’s success. This support has allowed volunteers to receive training in Dementia Friendly Walks and Strength and Balance exercises, helping them better accommodate walkers with varying abilities. The initiative aligns with Scotland’s broader efforts to encourage active travel and accessible fitness opportunities, ensuring that no one is left behind when it comes to prioritizing health.

Beyond its physical health benefits, the programme has become a lifeline for many, fostering community connections and reducing social isolation. Participants frequently highlight the positive impact of walking together, whether it’s sharing stories, enjoying nature, or simply having the motivation to get outside more often.

Local resident and newly trained Walk Leader Mairi Stewart shared her enthusiasm for the programme’s return, saying,

“These walks have completely changed the way I see my surroundings. It’s not just about exercise—it’s about reconnecting with nature, with people, and with ourselves.”

As islanders embrace the renewed Health Walks programme, its future looks bright, proving that simple, community-led activities can have lasting impacts on wellbeing.
