Plantlife has launched its annual “No Mow May” campaign, encouraging people across the country to put away their lawnmowers for the month and allow nature to thrive.
The campaign asks households, communities and local authorities to stop mowing their lawns during May so that grasses and wildflowers can grow freely. This simple action helps create habitats and provides essential food for pollinators such as bees and butterflies at the start of the summer season.
According to Plantlife, even the smallest unmown patch can make a difference. By allowing common wildflowers like daisies, dandelions and clover to bloom, gardens can become vital feeding grounds for insects and other wildlife.
The campaign highlights the dramatic decline of natural habitats in the UK, noting that around 97% of flower-rich meadows have been lost since the 1930s. As a result, gardens and green spaces are increasingly important in supporting biodiversity and helping wildlife recover. Plantlife emphasises that there are millions of gardens across the UK, meaning the combined impact of small individual actions can be significant. Letting lawns grow longer not only supports wildlife but can also help tackle pollution, store carbon and reduce the need for maintenance.

Taking part is straightforward: people can simply stop mowing for the month or leave part of their lawn to grow. The charity stresses that participation is flexible, and no space is too small to contribute. “No Mow May” is designed as a starting point for longer-term changes in how lawns and green spaces are managed. Plantlife encourages participants to continue the approach beyond May by cutting less frequently and allowing areas to flower throughout the summer.
The campaign aims to inspire people to rethink traditional lawn care and recognise the role that everyday spaces can play in supporting nature, helping to create a network of wildlife-friendly habitats across towns and cities. Find out more about Plantlife and the No Mow May campaign.
