Positive Step Forward for Tobermory Campus Plans
Council welcomes engagement with the Scottish Government as discussions on the future of the campus move ahead.
Argyll and Bute Council has welcomed constructive discussions with the Scottish Government about plans for a new multi-million-pound campus in Tobermory, Mull. The proposed development would provide education facilities for children and young people aged two to 18.
Council representatives recently met with Cabinet Secretary for Education, Culture and Gaelic, Mairi McAllan MSP, to discuss the project and the future of education provision on the island. The discussions focused on advancing plans for the campus and improving educational opportunities and outcomes for young people on Mull.
The Scottish Government and Argyll and Bute Council have agreed to continue engagement on the project, with a wider meeting planned involving national and local government representatives, alongside other stakeholders. Councillor Kieron Green, Policy Lead for Education, described the talks as constructive and welcomed the opportunity for continued dialogue, saying:
“We had constructive discussions with the Cabinet Secretary and welcome opportunities to continue this dialogue. We share the aim of delivering improved educational opportunities and outcomes for young people on Mull.
A wider discussion is a positive next step, and we look forward to there being balanced representation of island views at that meeting.”
The Scottish Government confirmed it has been working with the council to understand whether additional flexibility may be needed in the funding arrangements for the project. Ministers also reiterated the importance of ongoing engagement with local community groups and their commitment to supporting the campus through the £2 billion Learning Estate Investment Programme.
