Public Invited to Help Tell the Story of Scottish Football

Communities, fans and historians encouraged to share sites that shaped the nation’s football heritage

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) is calling on the public to help identify and record sites that have played a role in the development of football across Scotland. The appeal forms part of a new project launched in June 2026, which aims to build a fuller picture of the places that have shaped the modern game.

The initiative invites contributions from local communities, supporters, historians and the wider public, encouraging them to suggest locations linked to football’s heritage. These may include historic grounds, pavilions, parks, buildings or other sites connected to the sport’s development.

Scotland is widely recognised as a pioneering football nation, particularly from the 1860s onwards, when early teams and players helped develop and popularise the version of football now played worldwide. However, many important locations associated with this history remain under-recorded or lesser known.

The information gathered through the project will inform further research and help HES identify sites for recording and possible recognition as protected historic places, such as listed buildings or scheduled monuments.

Members of the public are encouraged to submit suggestions via an online survey, which is open until 20 August 2026.
