Roadside Litter Campaign Calls for Collective Action
Keep Scotland Beautiful is calling on communities, organisations and road users to work together to reduce litter on Scotland's roads and protect wildlife, landscapes and waterways.
Roadside litter continues to blight Scotland’s landscapes, harm wildlife and pollute waterways, prompting renewed calls for action through Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Roadside Litter Campaign. The charity is urging organisations, communities and road users to work together to tackle a problem that most Scots agree is damaging the country’s image.
According to research highlighted by Keep Scotland Beautiful, 91% of people believe roadside litter creates a negative impression of Scotland, while 88% see it as a significant problem, a marked increase from 69% in 2016. The organisation says littering on roadsides not only threatens nature but also places a costly burden on the public purse through expensive and often hazardous clean-up operations.
Building on previous initiatives such as the successful “Give Your Litter A Lift” campaign, the charity is currently working with partners to deliver targeted behaviour-change interventions along key routes including the A1, A801 and A90 Forfar Road. These projects aim to identify the most effective ways of encouraging motorists and passengers to dispose of waste responsibly.
Engaging young people is also a key part of the campaign. Schools across Scotland have been invited to design roadside litter awareness banners, with winning entries set to be displayed to encourage road users to keep Scotland’s roadsides clean.
Keep Scotland Beautiful is now calling for greater collaboration across sectors to support a five-year roadmap focused on reducing roadside litter, sharing best practice and delivering effective behaviour-change campaigns. The charity says no single organisation can solve the issue alone and that lasting change will require a coordinated national effort.
