MSYPs are aged 14 to 25 and represent every Scottish Parliament constituency and nine national voluntary organisations.
Locally, Bertie Summers MSYP recently stepped down to begin university, after serving his original two-year term and earlier this year Joe Smith MSYP also stepped down after being offered employment.
MSYPs are normally elected for a two year term but the Scottish Youth Parliament has agreed nationally to extend the current term of MSYPs for an additional year. This has created the opportunity for two new MSYPs to be elected to represent Shetland for one year, which is the remainder of the current term.
The two MSYPs will be elected from the Executive Membership of local youth empowerment project Shetland Youth Voice. Anyone interested in standing as an MSYP will require to join Shetland Youth Voice and to be an Executive Member. The Executive Membership will elect the two MSYPs from their number.
Sonny Thomason, SYP Elections Co-ordinator and Youth Empowerment & Participation Officer with Shetland Islands Council, said:
“Our two most recent MSYPs, like their predecessors, have been the voice of young people in Shetland and campaigned on a range of topics. With this by-election, there’s now an opportunity for others to follow in their footsteps for the remainder of this SYP term.
“We would encourage any young person interested in standing in this election to join Shetland Youth Voice and to become an Executive member. The two successful candidates will have the opportunity to influence change and to represent young people from across Shetland, locally and at the Scottish Youth Parliament.”
Anyone interested in joining Shetland Youth Voice is asked to complete a consent form available here by Friday 12 September 2025 to stand in the upcoming by-election.
